❝Unsurprisingly, the west London street where Bella Freud lives has an illustrious—and highly fashionable—history. Welcoming Vogue into her home, she recalls a period in the ’90s when “everyone who’s ever been creative, practically” would stop by the maisonette at the front of her building, including the likes of Kate Moss, Mario Sorrenti, and Glen Luchford. “But this bit at the back was a bit of a dump,” she explains. “And then when it became available, I bought it.
Working with architect Maria Speake of Retrouvius, Freud quickly gutted the place and reshaped it into the open-plan, window-filled “sanctuary it is today—then filled it with all the weird and wonderful objects that have made the house a home. The items covering its walls and stacked across its shelves speak to Freud’s eclectic circle of friends and collaborators as much as they do her own, playful aesthetic as a fashion designer.❞
